If you've been a Wabobian for a while, you might already recognize our buddy Chris Kemp a.k.a. @Sea_Kemp from Instagram. He's a talented artist and illustrator based in sunny Charleston, South Carolina and the creative genius behind our awesome Waboba sticker designs!
Once he did our stickers, we knew we had toss the brush (and Wingman!) over to Chris to add his artistic touch. The result was 7 super fly designs you'll want to get your hands on ASAP. But first, the other day we caught up with Chris for a little Q+A. Keep reading to learn more about his creative process, and what inspired the new designs. (then check out the collection here.)
Have you always doodled or created art?
Yes, I always doodled and made silly stuff, but nothing serious until after college.
What made you decide to become an artist/designer? What do you like about it?
I just kept doing it because I enjoyed it. Everything else fell into place. I like being able to work on many different projects and have fun with my job. If it’s too boring, it’s not going to work.
What do you use to create your art?
I use all kinds of mediums: spray paint, ink, markers, carving tools, digital stuff, the list goes on. Having multiple outlets keeps things fresh and exciting.
Where does your inspiration come from?
The world around me is inspiring - personal feelings to politics to music...just whatever is outside my window really. The most inspiring is exploring life from visual angles. Ideas and thoughts often conjure up something.
Who is your favorite artist?
Hmmm..that changes daily, especially with the influx of inspiration on Instagram. Thomas Campbell has inspired me in a lot of ways though.
What is your ideal environment for creating (i.e. music vs silence, outdoors vs inside, etc)?
I like to be out in my garage with the doors open, listening to music, and with a lot of room to make things.
What’s your creative process?
Changes with the minute and the project, but most things start from a small sketch or idea, and then eventually get more dialed in for the final result. It’s also fun to just make a mess and then turn it into something....it just depends on the mood.
Inspiration for each of the 7 Wingman designs:
All of the wingman designs were just inspired by thoughts or experiences around me. With summer in mind, these are some of my favorite things.
Which design is your favorite?
I like the way the wave looks when it’s spinning.
Favorite part about summer:
The general feeling of fun around me.
What do you do in your spare time?
I like to go to the beach, surf ride bikes, music, working in my garden, hanging out with my fiancé.
Dream person (dead or alive) you could play with:
Hmmm..Probably someone really funny. Dave Chapelle would be a good time.
Favorite childhood toy or game:
Pogo stick and skateboarding.
How do you keep life fun?
By never taking life too seriously.
